NYFW Trend Spotting: 14 Bob Hairstyles with Hats
1. Beanie + Baby Bangs
Think your micro fringe can’t handle being covered up from time to time? Think again. The humble beanie is again proving to be a street style staple worth its chops, especially when paired with an equally daring fringe. There’s no rocket science involved here either: Simply give your strands a refresh with some dry shampoo sprayed at a 12” distance to evenly disperse (we like Dove Refresh+Care Detox & Purify Dry Shampoo), and tug on that beanie, making sure the edges of your fringe peek out to frame your face.
2. Bucket Hat + Blunt Bob
Blunt bob hairstyles with hats such as the bucket and the cloche really took the spotlight on some designer’s runways this season—several iterations of the look, including one with a full bang (as above) and others with awesome natural texture peeking out from under the brim, were a testament to their versatility. No longer a dinosaur of the mid-century era, this season is breathing new life into the mod bucket hat, making it as accessible for our everyday ensembles as it is for renowned First Ladies and Flappers.
3. Beret + Pageboy and Crop
Another look hinting to a fabulous throwback era (this time the late 1960s) has been giving us serious Bonnie and Clyde fever. Some took the trend literally, with perfect execution, which just emphasizes the timelessness of this classic, French-girl look. Others took it a notch more Left Bank, teaming up this archetypal Parisian accessory with a graphic, shaggy, super-sharp bob—the ideal cool-girl finish as she steps out to weather that’s been warming up. Our suggestion for keeping it all in step: a light misting of touchable hairspray, such as Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Plump Hold Hairspray, to prevent any bends upon removal.
4. Gatsby Newsboys + Short Shag
Step right up and read all about it: That cute little newsboy and Gatsby you’ve tucked away for a rainy day (yes, we, too, survived the Early Aughts!) can once again be taken out for a spin. This time, hotsteppers and haute couture fans took the liberty of wearing these styles with shaggy bobs, with the ends slightly flipping under, providing a touch of the feminine to an otherwise super-utilitarian look. Bigger, fatter newsboy variations could also be seen on the runways, giving a texturized lob that much more interest.
5. Furry Pith Helmets + Curly Crops
Furs and curls, we tell ya… seems like the 2016 trend for texture is edging into the forecast for 2017 as well, as several shows displayed their version of furry pith helmets, bowlers and buckets on top of curly bobs and shags. One part equestrienne, one part boho babe, the feel is definitely a unique take on transitional spring dressing—one can only hope the weather holds up for all that fluff! However the case, it’s a great punctuation mark to this year’s patchwork knits and neutrals. Make sure your hair isn’t adding to the frizz with a good serum, such as Dove Absolute Curls Supreme Crème Serum.
6. Conversation-Piece Combos: Cowboys and Nuns
No one needed venture south to get a taste of it on the runways. Cowboy hats (and more cowboy-lite versions, such as fedoras and trilbies), as well as exaggerated pillbox/ecclesiastical-themed pieces also proved worthy of note. Bob hairstyles with hats such as these mostly tended to be simple and straight in texture, with minimal styling—a luminizing serum, such as S Factor by TIGI Smoothing Lusterizer, is enough to keep the focus on your chic, blown-out strands without overwhelming your entire look.
