For Kalman, art comes first and the medium follows. She is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker, and is well known for her collaboration with Rick Meyerowitz on the “New Yorkistan” cover in 2001 and “The New York City Sub-Culinary Map.” She recently illustrated Strunk and White’s classic The Elements of Style as well as Michael Pollan’s Food Rules. Kalman has been widely exhibited across North America and internationally and collaborated with composers, choreographers, designers and others to create genre-bending works. She has given numerous talks on a wide variety of subjects, including several TED talks. For the past two years, she has been the backpage artist for Mindful magazine, chronicling her explorations into meditation practices. [10/29/14 updated 11/3/14]
