“Glitterage” marries two of our favorite trends so it’s no wonder we can’t stop scrolling through Instagram looking for the latest iterations of this new technique:

How to D.I.Y. “Glitterage” at Home

While the balayage technique is nothing to laugh at and requires skill, training and precision, the temporary “glitterage” offshoot of the classic technique is a bit easier to DIY. As you can see in the photo above, balayage is the careful and detailed transition from one color to another. Classically created with brown, caramel and blonde colors, there are also more vibrant color variations that we’ve seen dip in and out of the spotlight over the years. You can create the “glitterage” effect at home in just a few simple steps:

1. Mix your magic.

Grab your Nexxus Exxtra Hold Sculpting Gel and dispense some of the product into a small plastic bowl. Then using a paintbrush, mix in the glitter of your choice until you’ve reached your desired ratio. In our opinion: the more glitter the better. You can find glitter at your local craft store!

2. Paint like a pro.

Once you’ve mixed your glitter, you’ll want to start painting. Start at the bottom of small sections of hair and work your way up. You’ll want to concentrate the glitter so it’s heavier on the bottom and lighten as you move towards the top of your hair. Check out this glitter tutorial for more guidance.

3. Set your style.

Once you’ve finished painting and you’re ready to set your style, mist your strands with TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray Extend Hold Level 4. This will give your “glitterage” even more hold and security throughout the night.
